The Founders
Steph, a New Brunswicker by birth, has been living and working in Halifax for over ten years. She’s been a full fledge foodie for most of that time, spending her spring and summer months on experimental backyard and porch gardens. When not in the garden, she may be found volunteering for the Ecology Action Centre's 'food action committee', or heading out of town for a hike, a swim, or a great music festival. Stephanie contributed her time and energy to Lake City Farm's 2009 season

Jean Snow and Bob Kropla, Lake City Farm’s founders, moved to Nova Scotia in 1998 from Winnipeg, Manitoba. Jean has always had a passion for gardening - even in Northern Manitoba, where “gardening season means two weeks of black flies and mosquitoes!” Upon reading Barbara Kingsolver’s Animal Vegetable Miracle, Jean’s passion germinated into the beginnings of a unique, urban farming business. Bob - who works full time as an airline pilot - has long been uncomfortable with the current culture of corporate control over the food we eat. Jean and Bob are interested in finding ways to reduce the negative environmental impact of our system of food production and distribution in addition to becoming more food independent. Together they have established Lake City Farm out of their own backyard, and are thrilled to see the operation grow each year.

As a volunteer, Sarah brought with her the experience of working on different small farms. She worked with us during the 2009 growing season. Sarah is currently operating her own small CSA farm in Pictou County, Nova Scotia.
They currently live in Dartmouth with their son Elliot and daughter Elise and Sam their Golden Retriever and official "farm dog".
Elizabeth Peirce was born and raised in Halifax and has been gardening since she was a tot. She has worked as a WWOOF apprentice in the olive groves of Tuscany and the gardens of suburban Rome. When not out in the garden, Elizabeth teaches English literature at Saint Mary's and Mount Saint Vincent Universities. She is the author of Grow Organic: A Simple Guide to Nova Scotia Vegetable Gardening. Elizabeth volunteered her time, knowledge and labor to our successful 2009 growing season.
