Get Involved
We are looking for space that is located in Dartmouth, enjoys a minimum of 6 hours of sun per day in the growing season, and that encompasses about 600 square feet (that’s 20 ft X 30 ft) of flat land or more. Our farm sites generally come with landowner-provided water and compost sources and we're looking for a commitment of at least one full growing season. Our farm prep takes place in the fall and work resumes in May through to the end of harvest season. Landowners, in turn, will receive a free share in the CSA Program (valued at approximately $320), which means a fresh delivery of local, naturally grown produce throughout the season.
If you think this could work for you, please get in touch with us as soon as possible so we can start the simple and informal screening process. Once we’ve determined that the land is suitable, we’d be happy to put you in touch with one of our current farm site owners who may be able to answer your questions about what it’s like to be an active participant in our growing urban farm movement!
Let Us Farm Your Backyard Space...
Lake City Farm couldn’t accomplish its important and delicious work without the participation of local landowners. By providing space, irrigation and compost to each of Lake City’s farm sites, these individuals, organizations and families are taking an active role in the community and in the blossoming local food movement. If you have outdoor space - be it a back, front or side yard - that you’d like to turn into a productive urban farm site, we'd love to talk to you about getting involved in Lake City Farm.
Lake City Farm offers a one-of-a-kind apprenticeship experience in Halifax. If you’re hard working, passionate about local food, and looking to create your own niche in urban gardening, this would be an ideal way to get outside for the summer and learn about all aspects of urban farming, including:
-Farm work: prepping, planning, sowing, amendments and compost
-Seed starting and transplanting
-Natural weed and pest management
-SPIN methods: cut-and-grow crops, companion planting, continual harvesting
-Harvesting and food preparation
-Marketing to farmers’ markets, restaurants, green grocers and other retailers
-Administering a CSA Co-op Program
We see these apprenticeships as a great way to share knowledge and resources, grow our local food movement, and encourage new farmers to get involved in urban food markets. We include apprentices in all aspects of our business decisions and rely on the knowledge and varied experience they bring to the farm! Our apprentice program differs from traditional, rural farm apprenticeships in that apprentices can participate without having to leave the city.
Apprentices generally apply through the SOIL Program but can also arrange things directly with Lake City Farm. Candidates should be available part-time in May and September and part-time to full-time in June, July and August. Commitments can vary and each situation will be reviewed individually.

Those who have limited time but boundless enthusiasm to share, can arrange ad hoc volunteer participation on the farm, anytime, by getting in touch with us by phone or email. We can always use an extra pair of hands - especially in July and August - and would love to hear from you!
