About Us
“Farming may not exactly be the best way to pay the bills. But growing food, digging in the dirt and watching the plants grow has always been, without a doubt, what I’ve wanted to do. Lake City Farm is giving us this amazing opportunity to live this dream with my family and community.”
Jean Snow,
founder of Lake City Farm
At Lake City Farm, we strive to provide you with delicious, chemical-free veggies and herbs, grown right here in HRM.
Lake City Farm is an urban, all-natural SPIN Farm (Small Plot Intensive), based in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Established in 2008, Lake City is founded on the principle that good, fresh food should be available locally and naturally, from a farmer you know and trust!
Food has changed a lot over the years. It’s no longer a simple task to feed yourself and your family. Food is big business. And it’s up to us - as individuals, families and communities - to ensure we defend and protect the integrity of what we eat. The food served on our dinner plates every evening represents a host of questions - ranging from the environmental (“where did this come from and how much fossil fuel was used to get it here?”), to the nutritional (“what exactly is thiamine hydrochloride anyway?”), to the ethical (“who made this food for me, and how do my consumption patterns affect their lives?”). While this may seem like a lot of contemplation for a meal, we think it also carries an important message that there has never been a better time to bring our food chain back home - into our communities, for our communities.
It is with this in mind that we began Lake City Farm. We’re a small, family farm and - with the help of a small team of volunteers and apprentices - we are thrilled to be making use of several backyard plots to produce a wide array of veggies and herbs!
Our operation is completely pesticide and herbicide-free and we use only natural inputs to ensure we’re providing our clients with the best natural produce possible. We are firm believers in transparency, and invite you to contact us with any questions or concerns you might have, or to arrange a visit to one or all of our sites. Just don’t be offended if we ask you to pick up a trowel or dig out a weed while you’re visiting!
